Pappy's Smokehouse
Type: Barbecue Restaurant
Price: $$ ($9-$15)
Hours: Mon.-Fri., 11 a.m.-7 or 8 p.m. (that's when they usually sell out of food) Sat.- Sun., 11 a.m. - around 4 p.m. (they sell out fast on weekends) If you're planning on visiting late in the day, it's a good idea to call ahead.
Fairly new to Midtown, Pappy’s is one of the few barbeque joints downtown. Pappy’s has everything you’d expect to find in a true barbeque restaurant. You’ll find a selection of three distinct sauces on your table, along with a roll of paper towels (you’ll need em’) and a red and white checkerboard tablecloth. As for the food, it’s top notch… especially the ribs. If you’re heading over late in the day, you’ll want to call first. Pappy’s closes when it runs out of meat… so the hours aren’t set in stone.

I'm not an expert on BBQ, but I thought their brisket was delicious. The ribs were okay. They had me with the sweet potato fries though. Those things are addictive and delicious. I couldn't eat it all in one sitting, but when I reheated the fries, they still tasted really good. I wouldn't drive all the way down there often, but I'd definitely stop if I pass by under these conditions: It's early in the day. The line was very long when I went. It went by quick, but it would have been nice to have a seat.
We were really looking forward to going to Pappy's after reading the reviews. We were very disappointed, not only with the bbq sauce, but with the food itself. The servings were plentiful, but we found nothing at all special with the food. The meat was mediocre, at best, and the fries were burned. Won't be going back there.
Good food at a decent price. With all the bragging that goes on concerning St. Louis and BBQ; unless you have secretly stumbled upon a really good, "dirty BBQ" stand on some corner; this place is your best bet. Very freindly staff and clean atmosphere makes this a hit; especially with the kids. Although the place might be a bit overhyped due to it's exposure on Man vs.Food; the end product is still good meat. I have only been twice and have had the brisket, ribs and hotlinks. The links being "hot" is the biggest understatement this establishment makes...they are more mildly spiced. The ribs have a very distinct smokiness, but the texture may or may not appeal to everyone; the same way everyone doesn't like their steak prepared the same way. The brisket was very good, and the ability to choose your sauce from stations on the tables, instead of being dependent on the kitchen staff's portion of sauce, or the surrender of having to eat a stock sauce is great, also.
