We had been to this restaurant once previous to this visit and had really enjoyed the quite and romantic atmosphere and vegetarian food. We suggested it as the location of a family gathering, but I believe our out-of-town guests left with regret. Unfortunately, the dining hall was anything but enjoyable, as the music and conversation in the dining hall prevented anyone from being heard. The loud and obnoxious atmosphere, combined with the mistakes that followed have drastically affected our perception of this restaurant. The bartender refused to transfer our bar tab to the table, causing confusion and frustration with our party. Then, the waitress brought the beef moussaka rather than the vegetarian, refusing to apologize or rectify the mistake with the correct entree. Rather than argue with the customer about what was ordered, this mistake could have been prevented by simply ASKING which moussaka dish was preferred upon ordering (or just offering an apology). A place we truly enjoyed in our neighborhood has become a place we will certainly avoid.

I visited Aya Sofia a few weeks ago with a group of close friends. Greeted with warm colors, a delicious aroma, and polite staff, I knew we were in for a great experience as we walked in the front door. We opted to sit outside on the patio, although the dining room was warm, tastefully decorated, and immaculate. After being seated, our servor made quick work of taking our beverage orders and asking if we would like appeizers. Let me just say - order the hummus! Served with warm pita chips, it was some of the best I had tasted - extremely fresh with a kick. The calamari was pretty good - lightly fried and served with a spicy red sauce... although I'd probably opt for an extra order of hummus next time. The menu is fairly simple - there are several "small plates" to choose from, or entire entrees - all quite tempting and clearly mediterranean in nature. Of the six people in our party, three ordered steaks. I could not pass up the opportunity to order lamb, as there were two lamb entrees and a special (an entire rack of lamb served over mashed potatos). I asked our servor which was the best, and without missing a beat said, "Our lamb chops are the best around!" I love taking recommendations, so I chose the lamb chops. I ordered them medium-rare, and although they came out a bit more than medium, the lamb chops were indeed delicious... seasoned with a light hand to bring out the natural flavor of the chops themselves. Everyone else thoroughly enjoyed their meal, as our conversation was continually peppered with exclamations of delight regarding the food. When our servor found out my meal was cooked incorrectly, she offered the entire table free dessert - unexpected, but a very nice gesture. The rice pudding, paired with a fresh cup of coffee, was a perfect ending to our experience. Aya Sofia is a wonderful, inviting, romantic restaurant serving fresh, flavorful food that is unmatched. I will be back - soon - and I'll be sure to bring others. It's a restaurant I feel confident that anyone would enjoy.
