What a beautiful drive from St. Louis. Have eaten at this restauran numerous times and have never had a bad meal. Three of our 15 grandkids ate their first mashed poatatoes at the Wittmond. We truly have some great memories from the reatuaran. They have wonderful homemade sausage, relish tray, soup, chicken, etc., etc. For the money you cannot complain since it is all you can eat. We have used this restaurant for many special ocassions and have never been disappointed.
What a shame: A once charming destination has gone commercial and suffered in the process. On our last visit, the service was poor and the food worse. The female server seemed genuinely put out by any and all requests. And the food was all canned and had a reheated taste. I remember when we discovered this place over 25 years ago. It was wonderful; like a Sunday dinner at Gram ma's house. Now it is hugely overpriced and nothing special. You would get better value almost anywhere. For that matter, if you want canned food, you might as well stay home.
You'll want to steer clear of this place. True, there's lots of food, but choking it down is trouble. You'd expect fabulous home cooking, one-of-a-kind specialty dishes, taste sensations. However, you're much better off bypassing this place and grabbing a fat burger at the diner a short way north. For our $12 we got plates of cold roast beef, bland fried chicken, lumpy mashed potatoes accompanied by equally lump, chilled gravy, cold out-of-the-tin biscuits, canned corn and green beans. This was a major disappointment.
